Hurricane Omar has been fascinating to watch. It shows how quickly these storms can change. It rapidly intensified faster than I expected it to.
Hurricane Ikeβs aftermath is a good example of how the category doesnβt tell the whole store of the damage that can occur from tropical systems.

Tropical storm is approaching the Carolina coast. Itβs not that strong of a storm, as itβs not even at hurricane strength.
The tropical Atlantic is still active in the basin. Itβs near the peak of the season and we have two tropical storms and a major hurricane spinning out there.
Hurricane Gustav has rapidly strengthened overnight and is now almost a major hurricane.
The tropics have gotten pretty active. We have both Gustav and Hanna.
Hurricane Gustav has formed near Cuba.
Hurricane Felix is about to make landfall in Nicaragua. Itβs back up to a category 5 storm!
Itβs not something that happens every year so it is interesting to me. Hurricane Felix is the second category five storm in the Atlantic basin this year.
Hurricane Dean is now a category five storm. Itβs winds are up to 160 mph and should make landfall over the Yucatan Peninsula overnight tonight.
Hurricane is about to made landfall as a category five storm with 165 mph winds. Itβs now weakened to a category three storm while over the land of the Yucatan Peninsula.
Hurricane Dean is still a category four hurricane. It should get clsoe tol Jamaica later today.
Hurricane Dean now has winds of a 125 miles per hour and a category three storm. Itβs expected to strengthen some more too. Itβs looking healthy on satellite right now.
So far this ear the Atlantic basin has been quiet in the Tropics but we now have finally have a hurricane. Tropical Storm Dean has strengthened into one.
It was around this time in 1972 that the remnants of Hurricane Agnes impacted the area. Iβve always been fascinated by that storm even though it was before my time. I just have heard so many stories about it.
