Three Squats At 295 Felt Great For A Lifetime PR

Last night I did not sleep well or nearly enough. We got to Joy’s later than we normally do, and I drank more than normal, but it was still a good time. To be perfectly honest, I haven’t slept well off and on the past few weeks because I have been having a lot of anxiety. That anxiety is coming from catching up with family members I haven’t really seen or talked to in decades. The big one is still yet to come. It has been nice to see my cousins, though.

I felt pretty good when I woke up. We did not have the heat on in the garage gym yet, so it was pretty cold out there, so that had me debating whether I wanted to give my heavy squats a go or not this morning. I had gotten fleece-lined kapow meggings for their Black Friday sale or whatever it was, so I thought it’d be the perfect opportunity to try them out if I decided to go and do my lifts. I debated whether I felt rested enough or not to attempt the squats while I was enjoying my coffee.

Around mid-morning I decided to get changed and head out into the home gym to see how the squats go. It was pretty cold out there, but my legs were nice and warm.

The light sets I did while warming up felt pretty good, so I was getting hopeful about how this day was going to wind up going. The three at 260 pounds felt perfect to me, and that’s a moderately heavy weight for me, or at least was recently. I found myself working up through those lighter sets much more quickly than I wanted to. Fortunately, Molly wanted to see the heaviest set, so I went in the house and got her. Whenever I do that, I wind up waiting for her to go to the bathroom or something, and today was no different.

The final set that called for three plus reps was at 295 pounds. I believe that’s actually in one rep max territory for me, but today I was not at all intimidated by the weight. I really did not even give the weight a thought. So often, for me, it gets in my head and causes me to fail or abort too early. The first rep felt super easy and even felt light to me. The second one felt tougher but still too difficult at all. The third one felt like a grind, but I made it, and I did not feel like my form broke at all. The video showed that they looked very solid. I did not collapse forward a bit on that last rep like I thought I did. Sure, it was slower at my sticking point, but I made it and made it look good!

I was pleased with how they felt and went. That 3 at 295 pounds is a lifetime personal record for me. The amount of joy I get from the fact that I am making these personal best while pushing 50 is crazy, but I will take it.

Those fleece-lined pants were actually comfortable and warm. I love wearing sweatpants around the house and all, but I hate any loose pants while working out. I may end up getting more of them when they’re on sale if they hold up pretty well. All my other ones did, so I can’t imagine this one won’t. I’ll have to see how they feel when it’s a bit warmer out there once the heater is on this weekend.
