Squats Felt Better Than I Thought They Would

I got a good night of sleep last night. I also slept decently enough the night before, so I was feeling pretty refreshed. Last week I had a bit of a cold, so as you’d imagine, I was feeling pretty rundown. Guess that is why my lefts felt so tough then.

I woke up and was drinking my coffee and feeling pretty good. While I was browsing on my tablet, I was already feeling pretty eager to get out into the home gym to get my presses in. I waited until after I got the mail, then got changed and headed out.

The presses were feeling just a little uneven earlier on with the lighter sets, but certainly fine enough to be doable. More than once, though, I double-checked the weights to make sure I didn’t leave a change plate on to make it feel unbalanced. I am not ashamed to admit that I have done that on more than one occasion.

The presses did feel better to me as the weight went up. Maybe it was a matter of warming up more? The final set was the one plus rep AMRAP. I wound up completing two at that 130 pounds. Not overly heavy but not light ether. This was my first heavier set of presses since I had the flu and stuff.

Once the presses were finished, I was feeling pretty good, so I started my next cycle with the back squats. Those lighter sets felt great. As the weight went up, I did feel it a little bit as if I were pressing out of the squat a little unevenly. It was not bad and was certainly manageable, but it did give me a little hesitation and make me hyper aware of my form. The strange thing is I felt like I was unbalanced a bit with the squats on the opposite side as the presses were. My head is still a little stuffy, so I think that is a factor in all of this.

The final set called was the 5+ rep AMRAP. This set felt great. It was the best feeling of all the sets I did this morning. I completed my 5 reps and stopped there with my head, but I had more in the tank. That was at a moderate 260 pounds for me. I can say I felt much stronger with the squats than I did last week.

I ate something and relaxed a bit. For a good chunk of the morning, I was considering and leaning toward skipping a WOD today. Ultimate: I found a simple SHIFT one and did it. I went about 80% effort on that workout. The dumbbells I used for the hang cleans were lighter than I have been using, too. I went with the 25s. I took the air squats a little slower. It served the purpose and got my heart rate up some and felt good doing so. That was all I wanted out of a WOD today. It was better than doing nothing.

Needless to say, I had a good but busy day for myself in the home gym. Not as intense as I was doing a few years ago or even last fall, but I am getting there.

Music today was Biohazard.
