Short But Heavier WOD
We did not go to Joy’s last night, but I still had a drink at home. It wasn’t enough to really disrupt my sleep, so I felt great when I woke up. We had to do the normal grocery shopping and run to the mall, so I wanted to get a short workout in before heading out.
While I was drinking my coffee, I got started thinking that I wanted to play with a heavier weight too. I have been mostly doing lighter workouts since I had the flu in December. I did feel like I lost some strength, but that was bound to happen after ten days of hardly eating anything and dropping a little over ten pounds in ten days.
There were several ideas of WODs that I remembered that street parking had several simply death by workouts where they did not overly complicate it like they tend to do. I have them in my favorites. They are perfect for a situation like today when I just want to move weight and keep it simple.
Quickly I settled on the death by clean and jerks. I broke out the 50-pound dumbbells for this workout. I haven’t touched them in quite a while. Not since last fall. They were loaded with dust, which adds character. This gym stuff shouldn’t be clean. It should look old and used!
The first minute with one rep and the second minute with two reps felt a little rusty, but I quickly got the muscle memory back and was cycling the weight quickly. It only improved as the reps added up.
I completed the round of 8 and that is where I chose to stop. Going into the workout, my planned stopping point was when I had to break the set up. It has been so long since I have gone this heavy, so be smart about it. I didn’t want to go into full fatigue mode yet. When I stopped, I had a good twenty seconds or more to go on the clock, so I could have kept going. If I wanted to push it, I think I should have been good through the tenth minute, going only on the time I had.
Truthfully, after those first couple of reps, they felt great. I was moving well and fast. The weight was feeling pretty light too. There were not any reps that felt sloppy. My girlfriend did the WOD with me too! That was a great surprise, but she said the reps I did that she saw looked great. I really do enjoy doing workouts with her. I just do not enjoy the gimmicky team stuff that Street Parking pushes.
