Proud To Own Some Old Geocaches

We love geocaching and love hiding them too. Time doesn’t allow us to get out much like we used to so we don’t find many. Time is the same reason we haven’t really hidden that many in the past fifteen years.

Molly had off this week, and that gave us time. The sunny, dry weather with temperatures in the 80s for late October made it into an opportunity to get out caching that we couldn’t resist.

On Wednesday, we got out for a nice hike up at Governor Dick and found three caches that were unfound by us. They were on one of the lower and less busy trails, so we didn’t see too many people either. I actually found two of the geocaches!

The sun and air made the day perfect for late October. I even got a bit of sunburn. I have not been outside a lot this summer due to reasons.

We spotted two large woodpeckers at one point after hearing them calling back and forth. At one point, they were chasing each other around a tree before they flew off. The one I saw was running around and up and down the tree trunk.

All in all, it was a great day.

Yesterday, we got out to Chickies Rock to check on two of our caches. Sadly, one was missing. The old one, though, Muggle Free Cache, was still there. That one only gets found a few times a year at the most. The puzzle keeps the finds low.

We hid that one in 2004, so it’s nearly 20 years old. Actually, later this month, it turns 20. It was published for Thanksgiving.

The same ammo can is still there. It’s just off a super busy trail now, but when we originally hid it, we hardly ever saw anyone down in that section of the park unless they were rock climbers.

The original log is still in there too. We added a dry new one yesterday because the old one has seen better days, but it’s still legible. It’s been in the metal ammo can out in nature for 20 years, so of course it’s going to have degraded some. An ammo can does allow humidity in, and that sort of thing makes them damp. Not wet, though.

It’s neat to have such an old cache in the original container and the whole nine yards. I’m relatively proud that we have it and have kept it going all this time. I know a lot of geocachers like “recycling” spots, but it’s neat to have some old caches too. This one was hidden, with the idea that it would stay there indefinitely, along with most of our hides.
