One Squat At 300 But It Felt Good After A Tough Cycle
Last night I slept pretty well. I wanted to do my heavy back squats yesterday, but for some reason I forgot to do them or got sidetracked. We went to the grocery store in the morning, so that’s probably why. My back had been ever so slightly twinging earlier in the week too. Either way, I was feeling pretty good this morning, so I decided to get out in the garage and give them a go.
Before heading out, I drank my coffee and enjoyed it. I realized that my back didn’t feel tight at all. I read through Hacker News a bit but got out in the garage before 8:00 AM. The catch is that before I even started, I decided if anything felt off, I’d stop there. That’s truly the norm for how I approach all of my lifts, though, and even WODs for that matter.
The light warm-up sets were feeling really great. The last couple of sessions, even the light weights, felt a little tough. I took my time working my way up in weight but was enjoying myself immensely with the lifts. I love squats, though, and make it no secret.
The set of three reps at 270 pounds felt great. I easily got through them. Next was the heavy AMRAP for one plus reps at 300 pounds. That’s roughly 95 percent of my known max from the last time I tested it out. The bar felt super heavy on my back, but not really in a bad way. I never thought I’d fail the rep but decided to be happy with one after the mentally challenging cycle I had.
It wasn’t that the weights were heavy this last cycle, even though they were. It was more about things just going wrong. I think I loaded the bar wrong once, and it seemed like I made every squat session into some kind of shit show, which is so unlike me. I was happy making the heavy one today. Even though it felt heavy, the squat felt great, and my form looked great.
I relaxed for a while, and we went out to the country store. I eventually decided to get a WOD in. Searching for a workout to do, I found an older one with double unders and kettlebell swings. I used the fake jump rope for the double unders because of the ceiling height. For the kettlebell I went with the 32kg kettlebell since it was a ladder, starting with 5 reps and increasing by 5 reps around. I started off way too hot and was through the round of 15 in under 3 minutes, but these things happen. I backed it off a bit and got an excellent workout in with an extremely high heart rate. Kettlebells do that to me, though.
It was a cool day and not hot in the garage, so I figured I’d wear my cheetah thing with the tail for the WOD. It never fails to make my girlfriend laugh, and the more she tries to hold back laughing not to interfere with my WOD the more she laughs. Life’s short. I’ve got to have fun with it, and if it makes her smile and laugh, that’s even better! It will be too hot to wear that soon. She did say it was funny, but not as funny as squats with the tail hanging down, so I did some jump squats after the WOD.
Music today was Cailleach Bheur.
