KDE 6 On FreeBSD
KDE 6 has hit the ports tree on FreeBSD. They have been working on it for a while, but it finally got ready. I have tried a few other window managers on FreeBSD but have always come back to KDE because of its customizability. I wanted to like XFCE, but I just couldn’t seem to be able to find a way to set it up best for me. I didn’t put a ton of effort into it, though.
Most of the built-in applications that are included with KDE are good and work well. They’re pretty consistant too, though. Dolphin works great for me, and Konsole too is great. Kwrite and Kate are good for my uses too. The other editors I have tried to seem to be limited or clunky.
I know that they have been working on getting KDE 6 into the ports tree for a while now. It finally hit the tree the other day and became available in packages yesterday morning. The installation was straightforward, and it worked fine right out of the box for me. There was, however, one GOTCHA. The theme was not applying to Dolphin, Kwrite and Konsole correctly. I used a dark theme with light text since that is what works best for my vision. Yesterday, those three applications were stuck with a light theme. I could still use them, but it wasn’t ideal. These hiccups are going to happen, though, with significant changes.
When I updated the packages this morning, all was well, and those applications followed my personalized color scheme. So far, so good. It is working great.
