It Is Nice When You Can Fix Things
I wrote about it years ago. I love the sound of my Sennheiser HD 4.40BT headphones. The battery. Bluetooth is not the only way to use them, though. They can use a cord, which is a major bonus!
I used them very frequently, both to listen to music at night and to listen to stuff sitting here on my computer. Last summer, I noticed that they felt weird on my ears. I looked at them and noticed that the cushions were peeling. I would rather not have to buy a new pair. Really, I should have to. Back in the day, that happened on my old BOSE headphones, and that cushion was not replaceable.
It turns out that these Sennheiser earphones have replaceable cushions. I had them in my cart for a long time on Amazon, but never ordered them. I was in such a funk last summer I didn’t care and had actually forgotten about them. Last summer, I just wasn’t in the mood for music besides when I was working out. I have had the bug to listen to music for a while now.
I mentioned needing new pads for my headphones to my girlfriend last week when she asked if I had listened to the new Dream Theater on my headphones yet. That is the type of band where you have to listen to them through headphones to get the full effect of the music. I said I had replacement pads in my cart but forgot to order them.
They were delivered yesterday, so I gave it to replace them. Last night the lighting was not the best in the living room, but it’s still so much better than years ago. My nerves were still shot from the fire up the street, so I wound up walking away from it for the night. I was frustrated but knew I might have better luck today when the sun is coming in the window too.
Around lunchtime, I decided to give it another go. At first, I was a bit frustrated again, but I looked it up on YouTube and saw a slightly different approach that worked pretty quickly with a little trial and error. My fat hands don’t fit in where they needed to be very well, and of course, my poor vision doesn’t help matters. I did get one cushion installed, then took a little break. A few minutes later, I did the second one. The second went a little faster.
Having three hands would have made it a little easier, but I got it done. Spending $11 on new cushions is so much better than over $100 on new headphones. It also kept some electronics out of the trash. I think that it would be great if right to repair took off and kept some of these electronics out of the dump for longer. There really isn’t a good reason to have a lot of this stuff with planned obsolescence.
They felt good when I gave them a quick test before charging the battery. I forgot how great these earphones sound! It’s like I got a new pair for less than a tenth of the price of new ones!
