I Finally Caught The Flu

For years, I have not gotten the flu vaccine because I have never come down with the flu. To be honest, I rarely even get sick. The last illness I had was COVID-19 a few years back, and like when I had the coronavirus back then, I have no the slightest clue how I picked up the flu.

It began on Christmas Eve when we took the girls’ birthday gifts over to them. I felt slightly tired, but I had also not slept well the night before, so I gave it no thought at all. While we were there, I started shivering, and by the time we got home a few minutes later, I was shivering uncontrollably. It was a bit chilly out, so I didn’t give it much of a thought at the time.

By the time we got home, I ate two bites of the leftover chili we were having for supper and started feeling extremely sick. I couldn’t get the food down; it tasted so awful, and by the time I got upstairs to the bathroom, I was violently sick. It actually felt like I tore something throwing up. Needless to say, that was when I was done eating. I went downstairs and got under the cover and couldn’t even focus on looking at my tablet or the TV. I kind of just zoned. That night I hardly slept.

On Christmas day, my fever kicked in. It was holding between 103 ℉ and 104 ℉ and spiking to push 106 ℉. At that point, I was thinking I would be heading to urgent care by the time my girlfriend got home from work. I didn’t go as the fever dropped slightly. I spent the day on the couch. Football was on TV, but my mind wasn’t really focused on TV. It was on more, so I didn’t think about how terrible I was feeling. As I felt the energy, I called or texted a few relatives to wish them a happy holiday but did not feel like even doing that. I ate nothing that day.

Thursday I felt like absolute garbage too, so I ate nothing except maybe a bite or two of something. Obviously, we did not go to Joy’s. Friday I still felt like pure garbage too. By then, my girlfriend was coming down with something too.

It really wasn’t until New Year’s Eve that I ate anything substantial. By substantial, I mean I ate a bowl of soup that evening. By that time, I was down a little over 13 pounds. That surpasses my COVID-19 weight loss.

With this, I did not have the extreme body aches like I did then, but the general sickness more than made up for that. I still have little appetite and almost no energy. I did at least get a couple of effortless WODs in over the weekend, and today I did slightly more. It was still merely just moving a little, but it is what made sense for today.

I never went to the doctor for it, but my girlfriend did because she needed an excuse for work. The test they gave her came back and Flu A. I assume that’s what I had because I don’t know how I would have gotten something else. I have not been around anyone she hasn’t been around.
