Heavy Presses This Morning Then A WOD This Afternoon

Last night I slept pretty well. I slept straight through the night again. I woke up feeling pretty good. While I drank my coffee, I was enjoying hearing the rain fall outside. It was a warm one for December, so the house didn’t feel that chilly, either.

Once the mail got delivered, I brought it in and got changed to get my strict presses in for this week. I am doing things all out of order to save the squats for Friday.

It was warm out, plus the heat is one now in the garage, so it felt pretty warm out there. I did notice right away just how damp, if not wet, the cold floor felt from the high dew point. The mats can feel a little slippery when that happens, but it’s manageable.

The light warm-up sets were feeling pretty good today. I found myself working my way up in weight pretty quickly. Too quickly, I thought, so I forced myself to slow down. This week is the heavy week, so I wanted to make sure I didn’t fail due to not resting enough between sets.

Programmed for this week was the one plus AMRAP set at a pretty heavy 140 pounds. I can’t remember the last time I pressed this weight. It must have been last spring or even winter. The first rep felt shockingly easy, so I did a second one too. That second one was a little more of a grind, but not bad at all. I stopped there since I chose not to get too greedy. There’s time for that later, and the next cycle will be even heavier. I was really surprised by it, but I’ll definitely take it!

Shoulder presses, at least for me, have always been the lift that is there until it’s not. It’s just like an instant switch from success to failure. Strict presses are just difficult to progress with. I like them though.

I chilled on my tablet for a while after the presses and also played a bit of XBOX. I was waiting for the dew point to drop and my Amazon package to get here. I ordered new batteries for the rower and a couple of CDs. I ripped the CDs and copied them onto my music player after they got here then began to think about doing a WOD.

I settled on doing today’s SHIFT WOD. It was not really a great one for me, but it was better than the regular version. Farmer’s step-ups are never good for me. Visually, I am just not comfortable with it. Add the wet floor into the equation, and it was a big fat nope. Shift had unweighted ones.

The workout was short, but it felt pretty good. Above all, it is always good to just move. Isn’t that why I do this whole working out thing to begin with? It got my heart rate up. It actually got it up a little more than I expected it to for the final round, so I am not complaining.

I have been a lot more consistent with WODs as of late, and even some double workout days have been sprinkled in. I guess that means I am getting back to normal.
