Got Distracted During My Squats This Morning

Last night I slept pretty well. I did wake up in the middle of the night and wound up lying there awake for a bit. I did manage to fall back to sleep, though. This morning I felt good while I was drinking my coffee and haven’t done this week’s squats yet, so I was thinking I wanted to get them done.

I wanted to do them while my girlfriend was home so she could watch. She had to run her mother around yesterday, then it got later. Not only that, but my hamstring was still feeling pretty angry from those farmer step-ups the other day.

This morning, after we got home from the grocery store, I decided to give my squats a go. I figured I should see how the squats feel and just not be overly aggressive. Of course, I was going to see how the light sets felt too before deciding on how far to go. The light sets wound up feeling pretty good. As I was working my way up in weights, they were feeling even better too!

By the time the weight got up to the fairly heavy sets, they were feeling great. I did not feel anything in the hamstring out of the ordinary at all! Today’s final AMRAP was 5+ reps at a pretty heavy 270 pounds. When I first took the weight off the rack, I noticed that it felt pretty light on my back. That’s so unusual for this heavy of a weight. The first rep was super explosive. So explosive that the bar popped a couple of inches off my back. When it crashed back down, it took me a bit to get settled. I did make one more rep, but my mind was too distracted to keep going. That’s ok, though. I will count such an explosive but heavy rep as a win!

My girlfriend said that both reps looked great. I thought they felt good. I didn’t have to record them because I preferred not to be tempted to get another rep in as my hamstring acted up.

The music for the squats was Katalepsy.

I ate something didn’t do much of anything fitness wise while I recovered.

Later in the afternoon I decided to get a WOD in. I had to dig through my favorites to look for something simple. I wanted to avoid weighted squats and things like that.

The WOD that I settled on was one that had push presses, air squats, and double unders. I only chose this workout for the push presses. They were not too short of a set, but also not too long. I thought it would be a good scheme to challenge myself a bit with the weight. No, I didn’t go overboard but did use the 35-pound dumbbells. The 40s are more of a chore to get to, so I went with what was convenient.

I was happy with how the workout went. The weight felt challenging but good throughout the entire WOD. I never had to break during the sets of 7 push presses. I did come out too hot in the beginning, though. It was good, though. Today, my plan was to be uncomfortable with it. Not only did it feel good, but I beat my previous scores with a lighter weight by a fair amount.

The best part about the WOD today was that Molly did it with me. I didn’t have to ask her if she wanted to do a WOD. I did have to weight for her to get ready, but it was worth it. As always, I love doing these workouts with her. See that SP? Workouts can be done together without overly thought-out team gimmicks.

Music for the WOD was Kamelot, something we both enjoy!
