All These Years Later I'm back To A Shared Host
After all these years, I am finally switching back to a shared host for my site. Years ago, I switched email to something maintained by someone else. It just became too much of a pain in the ass to deal with black lists and stuff.
Now I am moving my web stuff back over to a good old-fashioned shared host. With the NPE stuff going on, I have not been really desiring many of my hobbies, including maintaining my server. I’m also not playing with it or experimenting, so why keep the security risks rather than letting someone else deal with that aspect.
I am also saving a few bucks too! That’s always nice. Smarthost was cheap and reliable for me, but this is even cheaper. I will miss using FreeBSD, that’s for sure, but I can always move back over to a VPS when I am in a more focused mental state. I’ve been maintaining my FreeBSD server just fine. Just not as astutely as I used to. My memory has been absolute shit too. Like I’m forgetting passwords or even what I’m doing. Things are getting better, one day at a time, though.
I didn’t realize how complicated cPanel has gotten. I don’t like the new layout at all. Just like everything else, I guess things get catered to mobile use. Unfortunately, that means everything is dumbed down while overcomplicating it in the worst possible ways.
I’m sure this is a temporary phase that I am in, making me not feel like playing and learning. I have no doubt I’ll probably get back to a VPS at some point. For now, I need to focus on other things.
I guess when you get down to it, here is yet another reason why having a statically generated site is good. Sure, I could run WordPress or something else in most places, but again, that requires maintenance. Static files could be hosted anywhere.
Don’t worry, though. I am not dropping FreeBSD all together. I’m still using it here at home on my desktop!
