97 Pound Kettlebell
My girlfriend bought me a 97 pound kettlebell for Christmas this year. I knew what it was when she made me go out to bring it into the house. She asked me to be careful carrying it in.
The box was awkward to carry in. The way it felt to bring that into the house made me feel pretty doubtful that I’d be able to use it. It felt incredibly heavy, and the 97 pounds is legitimately pretty heavy to carry. It was delivered on Thursday, and I had already had a drink, so I did nothing with it then besides bring it to the house. Yesterday I forgot about it but moved it this morning, so she gave me a hard time asking if I’m going to open it. I should have made her wrap it!
It was from Kettlebell Kings and well packaged like the others I have gotten from there. This one was triple boxed! I unboxed it and carried it out into the garage, where it will live. I thought it felt heavy at the time and had serious doubts about whether I could swing it, but I still had to give it a try.
Today, unlike most days, I warmed up a bit. I warmed up with the 32 kilogram kettlebell which I use more often than not. Yes, I know it is a shocker, but I actually warmed up for a change. My elbow has felt a little inflamed, too, so I wanted to see how that felt with a weight that I am comfortable with before trying something that’s way out of my comfort zone. This new one is like a 25 pound jump in weight from what I am used to using on a heavy day.
It would be a lie if I were to say I wasn’t intimidated a bit by the thought of swinging a heavy kettlebell like this. It is nearly a hundred pound weight, but as soon as I grabbed it and did the first swing, I knew it would be just fine. Honestly, it didn’t really feel any heavier than the 32 kilogram one that I am used to. I only did like five or ten swings with it but wanted to just see how it felt. Molly said they looked easy, and to me, they felt pretty easy. I doubt that would be the case in a higher rep WOD setting. Anyone who has ever done kettlebell swings knows that spikes the heart rate in the nastiest way. But I do know it is going to go a long way to make the lighter weights feel so much easier in that sort of setting. I will throw in some Tabata or EMOMs in with the heavy one to keep the reps low for now but get some work in with it.
It is a great gift. I have been wanting to get this one for a long time. Way back during the pandemic is when I first considered seriously buying one, but they were out of stock. I will name him the Motivator. I also have been joking with her that she either loves or hates my ass.
It will be nice when I want to do kettlebell deadlifts in a WOD in place of dumbbell ones. I just don’t have a good feel for using the dumbbells for deadlifts because I tend to smash my toes. The 32 kilogram one is fine for that, but much too light.
